So here’s what I know about uncooked oatmeal: it’s supposed to be a lot better for you than cooked oatmeal. And that’s about the extent of my official medical/health knowledge on the subject. Impressive, I know. But in all seriousness, I have some friends who I am very confident have thoroughly researched the matter and they highly recommend incorporating uncooked oats into your daily diet as a means of (most effectively) lowering (or maintaining) your cholesterol. And I can say that I’ve had some of my own experience in achieving greater health benefits by regularly eating uncooked oats. Last summer I was going through some sort of weird gastrointestinal issue (it’s okay, this won’t be as gross as it sounds!).ย If I ate anything high in fat (including healthy fats like peanut butter and avocado in small servings), I experienced this really horrible pain that wrapped from the right side of my abdomen around to the right side of my back. I thought for sure it was a gallbladder complication. After some internet research and talking to friends, I found that eating uncooked oatmeal was highly recommended as a non-medicinal way to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort. Admittedly, I also made some other changes in my life– like running almost daily and improving my overall diet in general. But I give a lot of the credit to those oats! Last summer, I ate the oatmeal like cereal. I just poured cold milk over top and ate them plain (obviously, I was in some pretty serious pain, because I definitely don’t like my food that bland!). But recently, my husband and I have been eating this sweeter version of uncooked oats! If you’re on Pinterest, I’m sure you’ve seen 18 gajillion billion recipes for overnight oats. And here’s one more for the pile. Although, I will say this about these oats: they really do taste like dessert. And with NONE of the guilt! This is one recipe on Something Swanky that isn’t just not bad for you– it’s actually GOOD for you. Here’s a double bonus: I caught my husband telling my mom how much he loved these. And my husband is SO over the complimenting-every-dessert-I-make stage. When he says he likes it, that means it’s GOOD. Let chill in refrigerator overnight. Oats should be softened by morning and ready to eat! Serves 1 Notes about this Recipe: I’m sure you can also use dairy chocolate milk. I haven’t tried it myself, but I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work! In the ingredients, I specify that you should use 1/2 cup chocolate almond milk + a little extra. I’ve found that I need another splash or two of milk to get the consistency just the way I like it. This isn’t an exact science, you can easily add a little more or less milk depending on the results you want to get. And maybe you’ll have to try it a couple of times to find exactly the way you like yours! I try to make sure ALL of the oats are moistened (benefit of using a clear container), and then add just a little more for them to soak up overnight. I’ve made a rocky road version of this by adding a tablespoon of marshmallows. My husband loved it, but I wasn’t crazy about the texture of the marshmallows.ย I’ve also whisked a teaspoon of peanut butter into the milk before pouring over the oats– that was splendid ๐ Oatmeal from Friends: Banana Breakfast Cookies by Crazy For Crust Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal by Cooking Classy Oatmeal Smoothies by The Yummy Life
So totally making this. I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast everyday, anyway, but it’s usually one of those awful brown packets. This is SO much better and just as easy! Eek! So excited. Reply
This is such a delicious looking breakfast. So many of the overnight oats recipes I have seen have so many ingredients. This looks simple and yummmmm! Reply
This looks great! Have you tried cacao powder? It’s extremely good for you. My favorite thing to do is mix raw oats, mashed banana, almond butter, cacao powder, sliced almonds, and a few dried cranberries, everything to taste. It’s such a treat. I can’t wait to try your overnight oats. I love raw oats! Reply
Wow, this looks all kinds of amazing. Too bad I don’t have any almond milk. I don’t think using Nesquick will be quite as healthy…but watch me do it anyway. Reply
This looks amazing! Mat be a silly question, but do you eat this cold or warmed up? Also we are a family of 6, I am thinking this would be ok to multiply it for our family. Your thoughts? Thanks for a great recipe!!! Reply
Love your fonts! Also, I must be the last to know about the wonderful benefits of oatmeal. I have pureed oats in a smoothie for my son and must try that again soon. Oatmeal is not something I reach for unless I am making a cookie. Thanks for your encouragement to give them a try! Reply
Oh my. This is heavenly. I haven’t ever had overnight oatmeal. However, I’m a big oatmeal fan and this looks like the place to start! Thanks for sharing. ๐ shelbylanece.blogspot.com Reply
I’ve been trying forever to find a way that I like oatmeal, but I can never stand the texture. So – gotta ask – is it mushy? Thanks! Reply
It’s soft, like cooked oatmeal. But…. not quite the same kind of mushy. Sorry– I know that makes no sense, but it’s the best I’ve got ๐ Reply
Thanks. I actually already went ahead and tried this. I can’t say it’s my all-time favorite food, but it’s the first way of fixing oatmeal that I have found palatable, and I’ve been eating it most mornings. I had a bad experience with statin drugs and never want to take them again, so trying everything I can to keep my cholesterol down without them. Also have IBS, so anything that’s easy on my stomach is good! I’ve been using dark chocolate chips and like the crunch it gives it. I’ve also done some surfing and found some other ingredients to use in this that sound interesting, but haven’t tried them yet. I’m glad I stumbled onto this. Thanks!
Oh, one more thing. I don’t always fix it the night before. Sometimes I make it and just wait about thirty minutes before eating it, and it tastes fine to me.
You had me at “Dark Chocolate..” I had the same stomach issue last year and it was excruciating. Weirdly enough, it hasn’t hurt since I got pregnant. Maybe that’s the cure…? ๐ I am going to try this oatmeal because it just looks amazing and maybe it will keep my stomach happy after the baby comes. Reply
I love overnight oats. Heck, I love everything with oats. I never knew that uncooked oats were better for you, so I learned something new! All the more reason to make overnight oats instead of standard oatmeal more now. Reply
I just finished eating my cooked oatmeal … I’m trying this tomorrow … Pinned it and shared it with a friend! Reply
This really does sound delicious, and I love that it’s so healthy, too! VERY glad to know about the health benefits of uncooked oats!! Thank you! ๐ Reply
I love overnight oatmeal – your versions looks way better than the one I usually eat though I really never thought to add chopped chocolate – that’s why you are the sweets queen:) Reply
This looks so good!!! Quick question tho, what do you mean by old fashion oats? I have rolled quick oats and steal cut oats, are either of those what you used? I’m no a big oats person but I’m trying to eat better ๐ Reply
You can use quick oats, but I think old fashioned works a little better! They’re just in the normal oatmeal section, and it’ll say “old fashioned oats” on the package ๐ Reply
Done. Done!! Done. These are so completely and totally going to be breakfast for tomorrow–thank you so much for the inspiration! Reply
“Raw” oats are actually already cooked. The oat kernel is steamed and then flattened to turn it into the oats we buy at the grocery store. When you are making oatmeal, you’re actually double cooking the oats so maybe that is why “raw” oats are healthier. I do like the idea of adding chocolate to my muesli for a special weekend brekkie! Reply
OMG, made it last night for breakfast today. That hit the spot perfectly! Chocolate without the guilt. Thank you so much for sharing this very yummy meal. Reply
This sounds sooo amazing! I like to eat my oatmeal raw too with milk, cinnamon, and truvia. I am def going to try this as soon as I get some dark chocolate! Reply
I’m sure you COULD warm it up, but the point of these is to not cook them ๐ So they’re meant to be cold! Reply
YUM Ashton! I’m definitely need to whip up a batch of these! Thanks so much for sharing! Love Always, Liz Reply
I am not a fan of hot oatmeal but I thought I would try this. We are trying to eat better in our house and breakfast has always been a challenge for me. I had this for the first time yesterday and LOVED it!!! It is so easy and yummy! Definately a regular on my menu! Thank you! Reply
I just found this recipe…I have been trying different refrigerated overnight oats for about a week now. I just put this one together and it’s been chilling for a while. I made some substitution. I had everything on hand except the almond/soy milk. So instead, I used 1/2 cup of skim milk, 1/2 T of unsweetened baking cocoa and a packet of equal. Of course it not done yet, but by tasting the spoon when I was done stirring its going to be Devine. Just an FYI for those who don’t have the almond milk on hand. Ginny Reply
This is called muesli (MYOO-slee), and it’s delicious! Being allergic to gluten (and, by default, most cold cereals), I eat oats all the time, but I never thought about putting chocolate in it! I’ll try it for tomorrow’s breakfast. Reply
Does chocolate almond milk have less sugar than rgular chocolate milk? Doesnt the sugar content in these make this not so healthy? I am just wonderin…. Reply
I think chocolate almond milk may have a little less sugar than normal chocolate milk, but I don’t think a significant amount less. Sugar is perfectly fine in a diet as long as it is consumed in moderation and does not detract from the healthful benefits of this meal ๐ It is still full of protein, whole grains, and calcium! Reply
I’m not sure what happen to the recipe, but it’s not listed and I would really like to try this. Thanks. Reply
Sad to say I wasn’t crazy about this. I like eating oats but can’t stand the taste, and unfortunately this is very oaty. Couldn’t taste the chocolate or almonds at all, though I did like the crunch from adding the chunks of dark chocolate. I’ll stick with the overnight oats that use yogurt instead of milk. Reply
This sounds tasty, healthy, and quick. Also a good way to make a little chocolate go a long way. Thanks for sharing! Reply
