We have this saying among bloggers that goes something like this: “Don’t work for the blog, make the blog work for you.” Meaning, essentially, for a food blogger to not make things for the sole purpose of blogging them. Try to make things that you normally make and eat for your family on a daily basis anyway, thus minimizing your work load. This way you’re not making food for your family AND for the blog. I TOTALLY work for the blog. Because, believe it or not, the desserts I post are not what we would normally be eating on a daily basis. Now, don’t get me wrong, I really LOVE working for my blog. It’s a great employer. I love being up to my eyeballs in desserts and dessert photos all day, every day! That’s something I’m completely passionate about and feel so blessed to get to enjoy in my life. But the desserts I make are often specifically crafted with my readers and my own creative whimsy in mind, not necessarily based on our daily meal plan (thank Heavens!). So my blog does not actually work for ME. And, really, I’m more than ok with that. But lately, I’ve been thinking that there’s something I’d like to do to make the blog work for ME a little more. Enter: Skinny Saturdays. Or it may be Skinny ‘Sundays’ on some weeks. I’m determined to not let this be a source of additional stress, so I’m not really putting a strict deadline on myself for this weekly post. Both weekend days start with ‘S’ so either day will do. I’m a flexible boss ๐ . Anyway, the point of Skinny Weekends is to force myself to create at least one weight-loss conscious dessert recipe per week and share it with you. And………….. to weigh in. Yup. I’ve decided to start weighing in on my blog every week. I desperately need some social pressure to lose weight, and apparently reporting the number to my husband isn’t enough motivation anymore. So I’m getting a little drastic up in here, and reporting my weight to YOU every week. *gulp* So here’s a little bit of my story before we get to the recipe and the, uh… number. Overall, I’ve been pretty healthy my entire life. I was active enough in high school– played sports, worked as a life guard, you know. The normal stuff. But I always carried just a little bit of weight on me, because I really, really, love to eat. And I’ve always found it’s not very difficult to out-eat what I manage to burn off. So I joined Weight Watchers my senior year, lost a pretty good chunk of weight, and went off to college at 160 lbs (a good weight for me!) feeling all skinny and pretty. As was no real surprise, I quickly gained the standard 15-20 lbs during my freshman year at BYU. But most of my friends had done the same thing, and I was still pretty active, so I saw no real need for concern. Plus, I dropped the weight pretty easily a couple of months before my (now) husband came home from his LDS Mission at the end of my Sophomore year. No harm, no foul there. The weight crept back on during our engagement and continued on through the first few years of being married (I hit 185 lbs somewhere in here), and really felt horribly uncomfortable most of the time. I had just started to drop the pounds (down to 177 lbs) when I found out I was pregnant with Emma. Due to a few different factors (some out of my control, some within) I gained about 50 lbs during my pregnancy. For about 2 years post-pregnancy, I fluctuated between 177 lbs – 185 lbs. And it really, really did not feel good. In the spring of 2012, two important things happened: 1) I started having really horrible stomach pains any time I ate anything fattening (and I mean anything that had roughly 3g of fat or more. So…. LOTS of food), and I felt pretty confident it was a gallbladder issue, and 2) I started running. Between my adjusted diet (excruciating stomach pain is an incredible good diet motivator), and my new exercise regimen (friends who ran with me kept me consistent), the weight melted off. I didn’t even really feel like I was trying. And before I knew it, I felt SO good and was looking the best I’ve ever looked in my life. I just remember thinking, “this is incredible! I feel so COMFORTABLE all. the. time.” That was the most impressive thing to me– the 24/7 comfort, no matter which outfit I was in. My pants didn’t pinch me, and my range of movement was whatever I wanted it to me. I felt SO GOOD. This was at about 165 lbs. I know that sounds heavy to some of you, but I feel really great at 16o-165 lbs. And then the fall hit. Which meant, school started for my husband (so I lost my “sitter” for runs), it started to stay dark later in the mornings (making is SO much harder to get out of bed), we moved (total disruption of routine), Online BlogCon happened (COUNTLESS hours sitting on my butt in front of the laptop), and my blog started to really take off (meaning: lots MORE butt-time in front of the lap top). And my stomach had stopped hurting, which made me a lot less motivated to eat well. Everything combined was just a lethal combination. And I wasn’t strong enough in my new healthy lifestyle to face all of those challenges at once. And week by week, the pounds came back on. I won’t give you a play-by-play of the last 5 months, but suffice it to say: it’s all back. Nothing I own is comfortable to wear, I don’t recognize my face anymore, and my eyes are starting to do that weird squint-y disappearing thing when I smile. I’m slow and lethargic, tired all the time. And I’m weighing in at a robust 183.6 lbs as of yesterday. And if you’re wondering, my stomach feels fine. No pain at all, so I’m totally without that motivation that was SO useful before! So. That’s me. ALL of me. Totally out there. I know what you’re dying to say: “desserts! Desserts! It’s all the desserts!” And sure, yes. 5 new desserts a week is a bit of an occupational health hazard. But might I just point out that I was making 5 desserts a week last summer during that brief weight loss journey? And somehow I still managed. Which mean: I can still do what I love (making lots and lots of treats), if I can find a way to dig deep and find that self control that surfaced miraculously last year. I don’t want to change my blog. I LOVE desserts. I love REAL desserts. Desserts that use real butter and real chocolate. I think dripping caramel is beautiful, and I’m inspired by a stack of pancakes. It’s art to me, and I don’t want this part of my life to change. But I want to have this one day a week to share some of my struggles with you, and show you how I’m still going to embrace sweets in a healthy lifestyle. I obviously don’t know everything about weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but I do know that a lifestyle of deprivation won’t be successful. And I know that I won’t be successful if I don’t allow myself dessert. Whew! I think that’s it! Everything I had to say is out there ๐ . All I have left is a favor: please be kind in your comments and feedback. I think we can all agree that weight loss is a bit of an emotional subject, and even a little constructive criticism can feel hurtful if unsolicited. And, at the moment, constructive criticism is DEFINITELY not being solicited here. Ready to hear about this cobbler??? It’s really fab. And practically sugar free (the only sugar comes from the natural sugars in the fruit)! It tastes delicious, just like your Mom always made for you. And if you’re a bit of a calorie daredevil (like me), make it a la mode with 1/4 cup of light ice cream. And I added some fat free caramel sauce too– but mostly for the pictures. It’s perfectly amazing without the sauce. And it’s totally a Skinny recipe. Really! I clock it in at 5 WW+ (plus an additional point for 1/4 cup fat free vanilla ice cream), and it’s a BIG serving! Continue to Content Skinny Saturday: Single Serve Peach Cobbler Print Ingredients 1/2 cup frozen fruit, like peaches 3 Tbsp. Pillsbury Sugar Free Yellow Cake mix 3 Tbsp. Diet Sprite 1/2 tsp. cinnamon optional: 1/4 cup vanilla ice cream or whipped cream Instructions Grease an oven and microwave safe ramekin (or bowl, large mug), and place the fruit in the bottom of the ramekin. Gently whisk the diet sprite, cinnamon, and the cake mix together (don't over mix it-- the bubbling from the soda will contribute to the airy cake-like texture). Scrape the batter into the ramekin, covering the frozen fruit. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes (until toothpick comes out clean) or microwave for 3 minutes. Serve warm with fat free ice cream or whipped cream. Notes about this recipe: This will taste really good microwaved. But, as can be expected, the best taste will yield from baking it. I’ve found that the long baking time really isn’t a big deal for me, since I’m usually making this as an after dinner/blog-time treat. I pop it in the oven, write my post, and it’s done int time for me to eat my dessert while I’m blog/pinterest/FB surfing.Fruit doesn’t have to be frozen, but adjust cooking time if using fresh fruit. I’d start with 90 seconds in the microwave, and with 20 minutes in the oven. Disclaimer: Skinny Saturdays may feel like they’re written a little differently than the rest of my posts. That’s because they are! This is one post per week that I’ll be writing JUST FOR ME! Ashton! You are seriously awesome. You look great and I would never guess you were 183 pounds. I can relate to so much of what you said, as weight has always been my biggest struggle. I lost about 45 pounds in high school and kept it off, but it is still so hard, because my metabolism sucks and if I eat over like 1600 calories I gain weight. Anyways, I am totally behind this and wish you luck! If you aren’t signed up for weight watchers you should try out myfitnesspal. Seriously my favorite thing ever. I think that’s what gave me the courage to just go ahead and put my weight out there for everyone to see– I knew other people would be able to relate to it, no matter what their number is! Weight is such a tricky little business, especially for those of us who seriously LOVE to eat! I’m using a WW+ type app on my phone right now, but so many people have recommended my fitness pal, I’m considering the switch. Have you done WW+? Your ride on the weight loss roller coaster sounds very familiar to me! I just started weight watchers again for I don’t know maybe the 10th time? I was searching for a healthy dessert recipe and luckily found your super fun blog! This post really hits home for me. What a battle! Awww girl you look amazing! I can’t wait to see your skinny treats! I definitely feel like my blog works for me, with a big family I don’t have as much pressure to eat everything I make, and it’s part of the reason I only post 3 desserts and one dinner recipe per week! It also helps that some of the recipes I create are for my catering, so it’s like killing 2 birds with one stone! I have definitely gained some weight during this blogging life, but mostly I’m okay with it. I have the convenience of having all my kids in school these days and I am able to get my exercise and my blogging in during the day without guilt. I don’t know how you mommies blog with kids at home. Good thing I never had to do that, and never will (nope not happening for this old mom)! Anyways…good luck girl. That’s so great that you are in such a great place, Aimee! One thing I’m considering doing to posting our lunch/dinner type meals on My Recipe Magic. That way I can still monetize using recipes that we REALLY do use in our daily meal routines, but without disrupting the theme of Something Swanky. I’ve really been dedicated to meal planning the past 2 weeks, and it’s seriously been a life saver. We’re eating so much healthier (albeit, portions are still a little out of control), and I love that. And seriously, I meant it when I said I’m happy with “working for” my blog. Because it’s something I’m passionate about. But I think Skinny Saturday is going to be a great outlet for me to get a little more personal on my blog, which I’ve been wanting to do. Ahhh, I’m an old lady don’t forget. I think that’s part of my “great place.” It would be fun to see your recipes for meals! And I agree, meal planning makes a huge difference. If I don’t plan our meals we would be eating grilled cheese or pancakes every night. Not so skinny friendly! Planning out the meals each week gives me an edge on making sure I have the ingredients on hand and I’m ready to go! Slow cooker meals help too ๐

Ashton! I am so proud of you! I have struggled with my weight my WHOLE life and I would never have the courage that you just displayed in this post. I just met with a nutritionist this week actually because I’m tired of the struggle and I want to feel in control of me again. It was really enlightening. I told her what my “goal weight” was and then she did this electrode test on me and I found out how much my lean body mass is – it was just 10 pounds less than what I thought my goal weight should be. She gave me a goal number that was 35 pounds HIGHER than what I thought my weight should be – it was crazy! I guess numbers are just that – numbers – and for everyone it’s different. I just want you to know that you look fabulous to me and I’m totally looking forward to some skinnier recipes ๐ Reply
Thanks for your support Trish. It was a nerve racking post to write, but like I said, I need a new kind of motivation and accountability to push me forward again! I do pretty well under pressure, so hopefully a super duper public weigh in will be just what I need! And TOTALLY agree– numbers are just numbers. And it REALLY is different for everyone. Congratulations and good luck with your journey. I know how you feel – I don’t blog but I have a home baking business which means that I have a lot of tasting to do to make sure that what I’m sending out the door is up to par. For instance – I baked 5 different kinds of cupcakes this weekend so I had 5 batters and 5 frostings to taste and unfortunately every little “taste” adds up to a lot of calories. . .Ironically, I weighed 183 this morning as well and I was overjoyed! I’ve been on the weight loss journey since August (in preparation for my daughter’s wedding) and have been on a plateau for several weeks. I’m pretty sure I let out a shriek of joy when I saw 183. Ashton, I have been there girl! I gained 25lbs after we got married, got pregnant & didn’t lose much, got pregnant again & finally said that is it! Done being fat! I went from 172.2lbs (Sept 8th, 2011) to my current 125.2lbs (as of this morning.) That’s 47 whopping pounds! I never thought I would actually get here. I hit my goal weight of 135lbs after 7 or 8 months into my counting calories & working out routine. I have surpassed that by 10 lbs now which is just crazy. I totally understand the whole dessert blogging messing with your goal. I send my desserts with my husband to work. Then his co-workers can get fat & I don’t have sugar staring me in the face all day. You can do it! If you join my fitness pal, let me know & you can be my friend. ๐ It’s always good to have others to help motivate & husbands can’t give the emotional support of weight loss the way women can. Girl, you’ve got me motivated! I am a repeat WW member…lost over 20 pounds and managed to keep it off for a good year. Then? I started my blog. I don’t have the willpower to stay away from all of the stuff I make. But now that my jeans no longer button, I’ve got to make a change…so, I’m joining you! At first I was SO mortified to be attending weight watchers in high school, but after I really caught the direction of the program and started to really learn what they taught, my whole perspective of food and weight loss was totally altered! Way to be so open and vulnerable about your life. I was always the “chunky girl” in high school and at 5’4″ that was not fun. I was pretty much 40lbs heavier since puberty and all through college. After I married, hubby and I got serious about wanting to start a family and a friend had just had a baby. Pre-pregnancy she had the same 40lbs to lose and now post baby she had 70. She encouraged me to start before I got pregnant. I started running and as I was watching what I was eating, I realized my portions were crazy big. (ie almost as big as my husband’s and he was overweight and 6’0″!!) Needless to say, I decided to cut my portions in half and IF I was still hungry I would have some more…..I WAS NEVER STILL HUNGRY!! Initially I lost 30lbs and it was hard. I have since had 4 kids and was determined to lose the weight every.single.time. Most people when they see me they assume I am just “naturally thin” – Nothing could be farther from that! I wasn’t even one of those Mom’s who immediately looked like they were never pregnant. It always took just as much diligence with my exercise and eating every single time. So if I can do, anybody can do it! YOU GO GIRL!! We are cheering for you! Reply

Ashton! This is great… weight loss is such a beast and haunts us all. well most of us… so YES we want to hear it! And don’t feel bad about that baby weight. I gained 55 pounds with my 3rd and I was working out an hour 5 days a week! And I’m still too chubby for comfort, so this might be good for me too. Reply

I know it takes a whole lot of guts to put your struggles out for the world to see when we want to look like we’re perfect and have our lives completely together. Ashton, this post made me cry. It’s so honest! In a really really good way. I would never in a million years have the courage to do this, but I am SO grateful that you do. I woke up this morning feeling slightly miserable and angry with myself for taking a fork to a cheesecake (as in the whole cake, not a slice) last night. I feel your pain. I LOVE food. I could eat all day long and be a very happy woman, if it just didn’t take up residence in my gut. And I love taking pictures of beautiful food almost as much as I love eating it. I woke up today thinking about how I could still do what I want to do and feel good about myself. So thank you. I need this. Reply

Ashton, your story is very inspiring! I didn’t struggle with my weight until a few years {and babies} into marriage. I love to eat, and I love to eat poorly. I have little self control and will usually find an excuse as to why I have no time to exercise. Which is silly, because I am a sahm who’s kids are either in school or are working! I can totally relate to being uncomfortable in your clothes, I deal with that every day. Confession? I wear jeans at least five times before I wash them. 1) because I only have like two pairs that fit and 2) I’m afraid if I wash them they may not fit anymore! You are very brave for putting yourself out there in such a personal way. I look forward to reading about your journey each week! What a wonderfully brave thing you did and so smart to by asking for support! We all need help at various times in our lives with various issues. I’ve heard great things about the Dukan diet! I’m trying out WW again– it’s worked for me before, so I think I’m going to give it another go! My 15 year old daughter reads your blog regularly, and showed me this post! I also struggled with weight shortly after getting married, and used WW as my go-to program, but also dabbled in raw food, no sugar, and “more exercise” in my efforts to lose weight. On my most successful WW venture, I lost 30 pounds. That put me under 200, but not close to a healthy weight. I was introduced this last year to the program that changed my life–Take Shape For Life. Utilizing Habits of Health, the 5&1 Program, and a free health coach, I lost 86 pounds, and have maintained it since last July. The program is simple and effective, and is working for many friends and family members who watched my journey, and wanted health for themselves. It’s amazing. Ashton you are so brave! I am battling that same 15-20 lbs! I lost it last year when I was ill but now it is ALL back on. Ugh! The part that makes me feel the best about your post is that we weigh just about the same. I don’t have a digital scale so it looks to be about 179-182 depending on the day. So now that you are so brave to post your weight each week I am going to post mine with you in your comments! You are such a great motivator and we can all encourage each other! So week 1 let’s call it 180. Meet you back here next week. Just remember that I am quite a bit older and my metabolism is a lot slower. : ) Reply

My body will not go below 165 lbs…..so I understand you!!! Of course my doctor says I should weigh less…..don’t they all……I lost 80 lbs in 2009….and have kept it off….I do gain 3-5 from November to December…..but then lose it again….and I also need dessert….but no sugar-free stuff….just Less….so I am happy…and so is my husband, LOL….so keep it up and you can do it…. Dude– I saw 5 miles on insta today!! WAY TO GO!!! I can’t wait for warmer weather and to start running again! I learned this year that I don’t do winter running. I tried to just power through the cold, you know? But I found that it lost a lot of the fun/peace I felt when I was running in the summer time, because all I could think about was being cold and my stupid asthma. So, I’ve just accepted I’m a warm weather runner. I started on the elliptical this week, hoping to make it work for another month or so. Spring is just around the corner, I’m sure of it! Reply

hmmm, I may actually make your light recipes, because I know you have serious dessert cred and can be trusted to make a good recipe! People who eat nothing but “light” lose perspective and put recipes out that well, are just not that good…..I want to eat good food! So thanks for the light recipe. Reply
haha, Thank you! I totally know what you mean. Every time I see a “light” recipe, I’m like.. “ok, what kind of taste buds does this person have?? Ah, broccoli ice cream? Not the same as mine!” lol ๐ You like this, it’s good. And, I mean, 5 WW+ is hardly a no-calorie type dessert. It’s a lot better than what a peach cobbler normally is, but there’s still plenty of flavor there! Reply
Girl, I am so proud of you and your bravery to post this! I still hide from my weight loss and eating issues!! There have been so many times I have started a post on those eating issues I faced in high school and then after having kids, but I end up deleting it every time. You are right, it is just numbers and because everyone has a different body, it shouldn’t matter. I lost over 40 lbs. a few years ago and did really good keeping it off, until I started posting so many desserts. I have no will power with sugary goodness! But now I am up 20 lbs and my pants are uncomfortable. I am with you on this weight loss journey and will be cheering you on as I sweat in my basement to Taebo. Are you running again? My goal is to pick up running again in April. Huge hugs to you! I heart you…inside and outside! You are amazing!!! Reply
I’m not running again quite yet. I can’t wait to though! I just discovered this year that I am definitely NOT a winter runner. And that I am definitely an outdoor runner. So… I just have to wait for some warmer weather– but hopefully just a few more weeks until I can run outside again without my asthma acting up! Although, I’m still having serious foot problems– my heel. I think it’s plantar fasciitis ๐ Anyway, so I’m just doing the elliptical right now. But I think I’m finding a good level of resistance to do it at and burn some cals! Reply

I really love this post and admire you for writing it! Weight loss IS such a tough subject, but good for you for holding yourself so accountable! It’s something I’ve thought about but am not quite brave enough to do ๐ And I love the way you talk about managing a dessert blog–it seems like people don’t talk about it enough! Great post, Ashton! It’s like reading my story ๐ I can definitely relate to everything and I also feel the best at 160-165. Good luck!! I have been watching my weight since December and I am feeling much better. I wish I had time to run as much as I would like to, I run during off-school times though. that cobbler DOES look delicious! Weight and food is a struggle for most women, it’s a tough battle! I lost 25 lbs last year with a quick weight loss, and I’m almost to my year mark of keeping it off. Feels so great, but it’s a daily mind battle. Reply

I’m right there with you on the struggle of losing weight. Three years ago, I lost 47 pounds and finally felt amazing. Then I got pregnant, had a miscarriage, got pregnant again, had a handsome little boy, and now just can’t seem to get rid of those last pesky 20 lbs. I didn’t read this post last week for some reason but I read this weeks which lead me back to this one. Weight loss is not an easy thing but if you put your mind to it, you will succeed! Good luck on your weigh loss! I’m also going through almost exactly what you described- history and all! Weird thing is my numbers are almost exact to yours! You will find that motivation again! I had a knee injury that set me back but I am more motivated than ever now.. It’s hard to restart but you can do it!!!!! ๐ Reply

Hi – just found your site via pinterest. I love your honesty and I have to say that I have the same problem and then I don’t. You see, I have been putting on the weight but I never had a problem before my cancer surgery ten years ago. I’m cancer free now, but at the age of 60 I am finding that I have no idea what I’m doing in the weight loss department. Up until my surgery I had always been able to eat what I wanted and work out “some”. Then I hit that wall and have not done any form of exercise in a LONG time – and it is hard to find the right exercise for someone my age.
