But I just can’t possibly hang on to them for another minute. I’m bursting at the seams to share these with you! Red Velvet Oreos. And I don’t mean the soft, cake-y cookies with cream cheese filling that people like to call Oreos (although those are also pretty good). I mean crunchy, crispy red velvet cookies filled with real Oreo cream. I mean Red Velvet actual Oreos. I pressed rubber letter stamps (found in the dollar section at Target about a week ago) into the cookie dough before baking. As you can see, there’s hardly any spreading at all– so your words will stay in tact if you choose to add a sweet message! I was thrilled with how these turned out, and I’m even more excited to be able to share them with you. Happy Red Velvet season, folks! Continue to Content Red Velvet Oreos Yield: approximately 14 sandwich cookies (with extra cream) Print Ingredients Red Velvet Cookies: 1 cup butter, softened ΒΎ cup powdered sugar 1Β½ cups all purpose flour Β½ cup corn starch Β½ teaspoon salt 1/2 tsp vanilla 2 tbsp red food coloring* Oreo Cream: 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp granulated sugar 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar 3 Tbsp hot water Instructions Red Velvet Cookies: Preheat oven to 325ºF. Just saw these on instagram and could not wait to come check these out. Amazing Ashton! These look like real oreos except way better!! Reply
They are so awesome and creative! I love it! Pinned! Totally random question but I noticed you used 2 tbsp red food coloring and ive been making a few red velvet things and between tests and trials, I am going thru red food coloring like mad and the stores in my area sell it in a set. I have to buy green, blue, and yellow! So I have like 10 tubes each of those other colors, and no reds. Lol. Where do you get yours? Reply
Oh, yeah. I never buy those! What a crock, right?! I always see black (usually) and red food coloring sold right beside the vanilla extract in my grocery stores– I think an ounce? And pretty cheap (a way better value than the sets anyway). So maybe try looking by the extracts! π Reply
I have and no luck. Seriously such a ripoff! LOL I am going to start ordering it online I think! Crazy but true π
I can see why you couldn’t wait to share these, they look amazing! The stamping makes them extra cute! Reply
Love the dollar section at Target, it’s addicting. Just as I am sure these red velvet oreos were!! Reply
Awesome! Can’t wait to try these. So glad to see a recipe to make real Oreo-like cookies rather than the whoopie pies I see everywhere. <3 Averie, McCormick makes larger 1oz. bottles of their food colorings that you buy separately. I know Wal-Mart sells it. http://www.walmart.com/ip/McCormick-Specialty-Extracts-Red-Food-Color-1-oz/10308886. I also saw green while looking for the link. Ooooh! Wouldn't the oreos be pretty in blue or green to make them mint oreos! Yum! Reply
These are too cute! I bet they taste amazing as well. Love how you can put a message on each one. That would be perfect for Valentine’s Day π Reply
Home made oreos!? Say whaaa? And they are red velvet? This is totally genius! And I am freaking out over the fact that I can now make my own Oreo cream…that is the best part of those bad boys! Reply
So if I wanted to make a chocolate version of these, what do you recommend? The red is adorable but I try to skip the whole artificial coloring bit. I’ve made the Oreo Cream before and love it!! I’ve been hoping for a crunchy Oreo cookie recipe so I’m hoping you can give advice on how to adapt this oneβ¦ Thanks! Reply
Just leave out the food coloring, up the vanilla to 1 tbsp, and use special dark chocolate cocoa powder. That’s just a guess on my part… I don’t really know π Or just google search “chocolate shortbread recipes” and look for the one that appears to have the crispest edges (no spreading)! Reply
Love these, Ashton! So so cute and clever. Red velvet oreos should probably be the new standard. I love that you stamped oreo in to them, too. Amazing! π Reply
Yes! These look absolutely perfect. My boyfriend is addicted to Oreos so I’ll definitely have to surprise him with these for Valentine’s Day! Plus then I can feel better about him not eating all those icky preservatives in the real things :). Reply
These look amazing, can’t wait to try. Question though – why are they considered Rev Velvet when they have no vinegar in them? Reply
Has anyone actually tried making these?? I know their cute and stuff but I made a batch yesterday with country crock butter substitute and the dough was so oily! Then I used butter today and it wasn’t very oily, it just wasn’t very good dough, to mushy. I even added a little bit of extra flour to try to thicken it up, didn’t really work either and I didn’t want to add a lot and cut down on the flavor. The cream, great!! Identical to real Oreo cream! I used one teaspoon of vanilla instead of half tho. (Typing this on my phone, sorry for the bad grammar!) Reply
Did you ever bake the second batch? The dough is definitely soft, but it should bake up nicely! Reply
