In January they released two new flavors: Cookie Dough and Rice Krispies Treats. In all honesty, I actually prefer the Rice Krispies Treats flavor– which is weird for me, since I’m a chocolate girl. Regardless, I thought the cookie dough flavor would be a lot of fun to recreate (but making it taste better, of course). I hemmed and hawed for days over which type of chocolate cookie I wanted to make for these Oreos. I found merit in both versions of homemade Oreos that I’ve tried… a crispy, crunchy chocolate shortbread would be more like a real Oreo, and I like the idea of that (see my Red Velvet Oreos). But I was eventually convinced that the soft, cake-like Oreos would be the best way to go for this recipe. Mostly because I know the soft version of homemade Oreos usually have a sweet cream cheese filling, and I happen to have a great recipe for cookie dough dip with a cream cheese base. And I thought that made the combo quite poetic. Big thanks to my sweet cousin, Shannon, for prompting me to make these! And a shout out to both Nikki and Lindsay who beat me to the punch 😉 You can check out their versions of these copycat cookies on Chef in Training and Love and Olive Oil. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone baking mat. Mix all ingredients together just until dough forms. Scoop out cookie dough by heaping tablespoons onto the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before moving to a wire rack to cool completely and fill. For the filling: Beat together the butter and cream cheese until smooth. Mix in the brown sugar and flour. Mix in the vanilla and sea salt. Mix in the powdered sugar, scraping down the sides as needed. Use a sturdy rubber spatula to mix in the mini chocolate chips. Assembly: Spread the filling on the bottom of one cookie, and top with another! Keep refrigerated until serving. Are you cookie dough obsessed?? Then you’re in luck! A bunch of my friends and I are celebrating cookie dough week this week… which we may or may not have totally just made up. Either way, it’s delicious, and you won’t want to miss a bite! I haven’t tried the cookie dough oreos yet…but I always prefer to make things myself…like these! I am seriously drooling all over the screen. NEED THESE OREOS! pinned! Reply
I have no doubt that your version is way better than the actual Oreos! They look delicious! Pinned! Reply
I definitely want a huge batch of these, Ashton! I loved the RKT Oreos but actually preferred these — and thought it would be vice versa in my situation! There’s something about cookie dough that trumps all 😉 Reply
Ashton, I have to have not only one, but about half a dozen… just to eat by myself! I can already say that I prefer these over the store bought. You rock! Reply
I’ve only learned to like Oreos in my adult life but your homemade version I would LOVE!! Pinned! Reply
I might be the only person who didn’t try the new Oreos! No matter, I think I’d rather have these instead! I love the soft cookies! Reply
I can’t decide if I am more excited about the cookie, the cookie dough or the entire thing. Either way, I just know I have to try these immediately! So much better than “the real thing”. Thanks again Ashton! Reply
oh my…i have to try these. hope to find similar ingredients ´cause we don´t have all over here. but if i manage to get everything i will let you know =) Reply
Mmmmm!!! I’m so mad I didn’t get to try the cookie dough Oreo’s so these are absolutely necessary! I’m loving how chewy and soft and decadent these look! Reply
These cookies are just glorious Ashton! And I’m sure WAY better than store-bought 🙂 Pinned and shared on FB! Reply
As a food blogger you should have more respect for baking than coping out using a box of cake mix. There is no room for adaptation for food restrictions when you use a box mix in a recipe. Plus those things are full of crap. Reply
I saw this on Pinterest and made it that very night at my sister’s place for us, my 10 year old stepdaughter and my mom to try. We were so excited, and they were yummy and fairly easy to make, but I have to admit that none of us thought the center tasted anything like real cookie dough. The cream cheese is very dominant…still tasty, but not cookie dough-like at all. I’d love to try this concept again but maybe find a different recipe for the filling. Reply
Is the flour necessary? I could make a gluten-free version for my mom (using gluten-free cake mix), if the flour isn’t necessary. Also, suggestions for the extra filling…? Thanks. Reply
